Chinese Opera Houses and Theatres
TWFP has been providing mechanical, electrical and civil engineering services to the Government of China for large-scale performing-arts theatres since the late 1990s. Our engineers form part of an international design team led by Carlos Ott from Uruguay and supported by acousticians and theatre consultants from Germany and structural engineers from Toronto. Each project involves international coordination, as well as learning Chinese building codes.
Our mechanical engineers designed an underfloor air distribution system for the theatres, which provides under-the-seat ventilation to each audience member, thus increasing audience comfort and improving energy efficiency.
Our projects include:
- The Jiang Su Opera House, Nanjing - An 1850-seat opera hall, a 1000-seat concert hall and an 800-seat multi-purpose theatre.
- The Hangzhou Theatre, Qian Jiang City - Resembles a glass cone, which adheres to a traditional Chinese architectural principle: being "full of sunshine," and appears as a rising sun from the opposite bank of the Qian Tang River. The facility consists of both outdoor and indoor theatres, an odeum, and a multifunction hall.
