Brantford Police Service
TWFP's Brantford Police Headquarters design was driven by the desire for a community-based facility. The inclusive decision-making process involved all levels of staff on the building committee, and resulted in a design that breaks down hierarchies and gives staff pride in their workplace. The building design combines casual meeting spaces with administration, operations and training areas, such as the indoor firing range. The final layout respects the acoustic and functional separation required by the operational areas while maintaining an environment that is bright, airy, and accessible.
When the 15-year planning horizon of the original facility ended, TWFP conducted a facility assessment to plan for an expansion, which was necessitated by increased staff, changes in policing procedures, and an ever-growing Brantford community. The expansion design addresses space deficiencies through additional locker space, an increased properties area, and a front desk rearrangement which takes advantage of new technologies and improves overall functionality. Phased construction enabled police operations to continue with minimal disruption throughout the project's duration.
"The reaction from our members and the public has been very positive. The building has proven to be both operationally and administratively most efficient and functional. Our members are displaying a feeling of true ownership. This, no doubt, stems from our early endeavors of interviewing personnel from all sections of the Service and any others who wished to contribute their thoughts on the design of the building. "
