Uptown Parkade
Designing the Uptown Waterloo Parkade involved not only providing a safe, functional parking facility, but also respecting the facility's prominent location and potential impact on the Uptown Waterloo streetscape. The resulting brick design of the Parkade, with its glass stair towers, windows, safety features, fountains and landscaping, meets both challenges while providing 468 parking spaces on 6 parking levels. Consulting with groups such as the K-W Sexual Assault Support Centre and the Barrier Free Working Group allowed our designers to understand the pertinent safety and accessibility issues associated with parking facilities. The Parkade is a central feature of Uptown Waterloo, and was recognized with the following awards: Award of Merit from the Institutional and Municipal Parking Congress for Parking Design and Program Innovation; Site Plan Award in the "Other Category" from the City of Waterloo acknowledging the excellence in design; Design Awards Special Recognition Certificate from the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute acknowledging excellence in engineering design using prestressed concrete.
