University of Waterloo William Lyon MacKenzie King Residence
Following the success of our renovation design at University of Waterloo's Village One residence, the university selected TWFP's architects, engineers, and construction managers to bring the new William Lyon Mackenzie King Village (WLMK) residence to life.
Encouraging the "socialization" of first year students is a key challenge for university housing departments. WLMK's design addresses this challenge through its suite style, which is designed in a courtyard configuration and divided into segments, giving the impression of one large encompassing unit comprised of smaller apartment-sized units. The residence is arranged in groups of four bedroom apartments spread across four floors. The layout provides a dynamic, open- concept central complex with lounges, game rooms, multi-purpose rooms, laundry facilities, and an Internet café. Creating harmony with existing residences was essential to maintaining the overall design and flow of the university campus. WLMK's exterior consists of modern brick and glass that complements the two existing student residences on campus. This creates harmony between all three residences while allowing WLMK to make its own unique contribution to the university landscape.
